Fort closure warning ‘was like a bolt out of the blue’

Following decades of under-investment, parts of the complex, which is used by thousands of Islanders every day, are beginning to fall into disrepair.

Last week Assistant Economic Development Minister Steve Pallett, who has responsibility for sport, warned that unless the States or a private firm made a significant investment into the once thriving leisure complex, the government might have no option but to close it due to health and safety concerns in the next few years.

Nick Corbel, regional representative for Unite the Union, has criticised the States for failing to invest in the facility in recent years and for allowing the state of disrepair to worsen. And he intends to raise the concerns of the staff with the Economic Development Department.
