A blasted nuisance…

Royal Navy bomb disposal experts were called in when the 250-kg device, which was described as posing a ‘very serious threat’, was found in the sea bed during excavation work.

It is the second time in recent months that the conventional passenger and freight ferry has been unable to approach Portsmouth Harbour because of the discovery of an explosive device.

A Condor Ferries spokesman said: ‘We were in very frequent contact with Portsmouth Harbour authorities and our passengers both on board Commodore Clipper and in the terminal, offering complimentary tea and coffee to travellers while the ordinance was removed from the harbour entrance.’
