More animal snares found in St Ouen nature reserve

St Ouen honorary police searched an area of Mielle de Morville, at the northern end of the Five Mile Road, and removed two snares after they received a report over the weekend.

Last September a dog was injured after it became caught in two of the devices at Chemin de Moulin, near where the latest snares were recovered.

Centenier Clive Murphy, said that the snares were more sophisticated and dangerous than those found last year.

‘These look like first-class snares, and if a dog had got caught in one of them it would have been seriously injured,’ he said.

Despite legislation coming in to force in 2005 which states that anyone who sets the traps faces a fine of £1,000, snares are still being set illegally.

The two found at the weekend were close to the public car park off Chemin de Moulin in an area bordering National Trust for Jersey land, which is also open to the public.
