States assets could be sold to help fund new hospital

The new hospital, which is to be built on the current site, is expected to cost around £466 million to build.

However, that figure does not include the cost of demolishing certain parts of the current Hospital –including Peter Crill House – and key worker accommodation.

The States recently postponed voting on Treasury Minister Alan Maclean’s plans to borrow up to £400 million over a period of 40 years so that the Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel could review the proposals. Under his plans, the rest of the project would be funded using money from the Strategic Reserve.

During a quarterly hearing with the panel this week Senator Maclean confirmed that taking into account the cost of borrowing, the new Hospital was likely to end up costing in the region of £950 million.

He added that that figure included most of the main build but that certain aspects of the project were not covered by the £466 million costs.
