Deputy: ‘Last chance to reform States ourselves’

The debate of States reform has raged on for nearly two decades, with dozens of propositions and amendments being brought before the Assembly.

And although Jersey’s electorate voted overwhelmingly in favour of electoral reform during a referendum held in 2013 – with 80 per cent of Islanders voting to abolish Senatorial positions – the States controversially voted against introducing the mandated changes by a vote of 28–21 in July that year.

However, the issue of electoral reform is once again on the table after Deputy Andrew Lewis lodged a proposition – due to be debated on Wednesday – which would effectively enact the winning 2013 referendum option.

Deputy Lewis said that if Members rejected the proposals, then the only alternative would be for a Royal Commission – a public inquiry authorised by the Queen or her representative in the form of a Governor – to be held to deal with electoral reform.
