Law firm’s £60,000 fees slashed by 80 per cent

The forensic examination concluded that Carey Olsen was eligible to reclaim only £9,725 of the £60,873 worth of bills it had submitted.

In his judgment, Magistrate’s Court Greffier David Le Heuzé, who conducted the auditing process known as ‘taxation’ as part of his duties in the Petty Debts Court, said there were numerous instances where the firm had not presented evidence or file notes to justify the claim being made for work it had apparently carried out.

He also identified numerous claims that were ‘duplication of work already undertaken’.

In a statement the law firm said: ‘The Court ruled that having represented itself Carey Olsen could only recover its costs as a litigant in person. This had the inevitable effect of limiting any recovery Carey Olsen might make from Mr Kenny for defending itself.’
