Constable to battle for £600,000 for St Helier

The 2017 Budget was largely approved after two days of debate last week. However, Members rejected an article proposed by ministers which would have amended the Rates Law to mean the States could start paying rates on its buildings. Parishes would also have been forced to pay Islandwide rates on their public buildings.

St Helier stood to be the main beneficiary of the States paying parish rates, to the tune of an estimated £600,000.

However, St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft – who has fought for years for the proposal to be considered – said the other parish Constables had made an error in rejecting the plans and that the Council of Ministers did not do enough to persuade Members to vote in favour of the move.
