States vote to scrap above inflation alcohol price rise

The debate on the 2017 Budget began yesterday with the Council of Ministers receiving an early blow to their funding plans.

Treasury Minister Alan Maclean had proposed increases above the rate of inflation to alcohol, including an 8p rise on a bottle of wine and an extra 2p on a pint of beer.

However, an amendment from St Helier Deputy Russell Labey calling for impôt increases to be capped at inflation levels was approved by the Assembly after over four hours of debate and will come into force if the States adopt the 2017 Budget later this week. The Deputy’s plan to cap fuel duty increases in the same way was rejected.

The cap on alcohol duty rises is expected to reduce States income by £690,000 next year.
