More exotic catch for Island fishermen as seas warm up

But now Jersey’s waters are being invaded by a host of exotic fish – and it’s all thanks to the ever-increasing sea temperatures.

Gilthead bream, bonito and even tuna are being caught more regularly, and fishermen have this year enjoyed a bumper crop of squid.

And fish traditionally caught around Jersey – such as bass and garfish – which tend to move on during the winter, have stayed in larger numbers than normal due to the warmer sea temperatures.

Mick Ward, owner of Mr Fish tackle shop, said that in recent years fishermen have noticed an increase in the number of fish which are usually at home around the Mediterranean and Bay of Biscay.
