Easter Rising flag remnant returned

The small piece of cloth was taken from the Jacob’s Biscuit Factory, a rebel stronghold during the uprising, and kept as a memento by Bugler John Le Prévost in 1916. This weekend it was returned to the Irish capital by his grandson David Blake.

It will shortly go on public display at Glasnevin Cemetery and Museum alongside the historic proclamation document of the Irish Republic written in April 1916, the founding document of the free state of Ireland. Its return means that the memory of Jersey soldiers who risked their lives to overcome Irish rebellion against British rule is to be enshrined forever in one of Dublin’s most important museums.

Yesterday, in a moving ceremony of reconciliation, Mr Blake handed over his family’s cherished relic and other memorabilia including his grandfather’s hand-written account of fierce street fighting.
