Independent prison board is attracting volunteers

Earlier this year the States Assembly agreed to stop Jurats serving on the Prison Board of Visitors and to replace them with independent members.

The move followed concerns that inmates would not want to seek help from Jurats – judges of fact in the Royal Court who decide on a prisoners’ sentences.

A proposition has now been lodged outlining the details of the establishment, functioning and administration of the new Independent Prison Monitoring Board. It is due to be debated on 17 January.

Home Affairs Minister Kristina Moore said several Islanders had already expressed interest in the voluntary roles.
