Tumble-dryer fire hazard warning

In February, Whirlpool, which manufactures Indesit, Hotpoint and Creda machines, announced that up to five million of its products in the UK could be unsafe.

Owners have since been asked to register their dryers online to enable them to be repaired for free. However, it is estimated that there are still about 2.9 million faulty dryers in people’s homes.

Yesterday, Jersey Fire and Rescue crews were called to a house after an Indesit appliance caught fire and filled the property with smoke.

The fire was caused by lint building up around the drum and coming into contact with the heating element – the same fault which sparked the nationwide recall.

Alexis Militis, crew commander for the Fire and Rescue Service, said that it was concerning that faulty appliances could still be in people’s homes.
