Graeme Le Saux was ‘never aware of abuse’

Football has been plunged into a sex abuse scandal described as three times larger than the Jimmy Savile affair after players waived their right to anonymity and claimed they were abused as juniors at some of Britain’s biggest clubs.

Last week former football coach Barry Bennell was charged with eight counts of historical child abuse following allegations made by former players. An NSPCC hotline has received contact from around 900 individuals and 18 police forces are now investigating allegations of historical abuse in football.

Mr Le Saux, who played for Chelsea, Blackburn and Southampton during his career, said he never heard of any cases of abuse or even rumours while he was coming through the junior ranks.
