Farmers must ‘go green’ or face cuts to their subsidies

Addressing more than 80 agricultural industry members at yesterday’s annual Jersey Farming Conference at La Mare Wine Estate, Scott Meadows, assistant director at the Environment Department, said that from next year, if farmers want to continue to receive financial support, they will have to start demonstrating that they are farming according to best environment practices.

And that will include being assessed each year by independent UK inspectors working for organisations recognised by the food industry such as the Red Tractor and Linking Environment And Farming (Leaf). At present, subsidies are based on the area of land farmed and the quantity of milk produced.
