Minimum wage to rise to £7.18 an hour

Deputy Susie Pinel’s proposition to boost the hourly rate firms are required to pay workers, which stands at £6.97, was approved by a standing vote.

A move to increase the rate even further to £7.20 per hour put forward by Deputy Sam Mézec was rejected.

Outlining his amendment to the minister’s plans, Deputy Mézec said that he would continue to push for a higher minimum wage as long as Jersey’s rate remained lower than the UK Living Wage, which is due to increase to £7.50 next April for over-25s. A living wage is considered high enough to maintain a normal standard of living.
