New card brings quick relief for bowel disorder sufferers

People with the disease will be able to show the card, which was designed by Islander Richard Poingdestre, to encourage business owners to allow them to use their facilities, including the disabled toilets.

Mr Poingdestre, who launched a Facebook group for people with inflammatory bowel diseases in Jersey and Guernsey in 2011, said: ‘Two months ago I discovered that the UK had urgency cards. I decided to set up a similar thing for sufferers in the Channel Islands. I had a meeting with Health Minister Andrew Green and he was very helpful and supported the idea.

Mr Poingdestre’s condition went undetected for some time before he was eventually diagnosed with colitis 12 years ago. Colitis is a chronic condition characterised by reoccurring diarrhoea and stomach pains, and is one of the two main forms of inflammatory bowel disease. The other – Crohn’s disease – has similar symptoms.
