Voting for prisoners

Chief probation officer Brian Heath said prisoners ‘are people too’ and should be allowed to engage in the democratic process.

His message was echoed by Bill Millar, prison governor, and Kevin Houiellebecq, managing director of the Freedom for Life Ministries, which supports inmates during and after their incarceration.

The Privileges and Procedures Committee have lodged proposals with the House to allow prisoners sentenced to less than four years in jail to vote in line with European Court of Human Rights regulations.
