‘Use Gas Place site for Town Park extension’

St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft has lodged a proposition calling for the land, which is owned by Jersey Gas, to be bought by the States and converted into ‘additional open space and public parking as appropriate’.

The move comes after plans were submitted last month by Brookfield Asset Management to convert the area, which contains a disused gasometer, Jersey Gas staff accommodation and other units, into a 253-home development.

If Mr Crowcroft’s proposition is approved it would block the development and secure the land for public use.

Mr Crowcroft’s proposition says that the purchase of the Gas Place site must therefore have already been considered ‘feasible’ by the Jersey Development Company.

The proposition is due to be debated on 17 January 2017.
