Operation Clean-up after the worst of the weather

Storm Angus, which struck on Saturday night and Sunday morning, and Monday night’s unnamed storm ripped slates off roofs, tore down fence panels and toppled dozens of trees, including several at the Val de la Mare arboretum.

And two parked cars in St Mark’s Road were damaged on Monday after they were hit by a fallen road sign.

One of the most severely damaged properties was Southern Rocks, a three-storey block of flats off St Clement’s Coast Road which had most of its roof ripped off on Monday night.

One resident, who didn’t want to be named, said that the roofing had covered three cars and most of the parking area behind the housing block. Five firefighters attended the scene and spent two hours cutting a path through the roofing material, which measured about 12 metres by 24.

Although the weather looks set to calm down in time for the weekend, the Met Office is still predicting winds which could reach Force 6 to 7.
