Honorary police force ‘could operate with fewer officers’

Although the current recommended number of honorary officers is 300, Hugh Raymond, president of the Honorary Police Association, said that the force had been able to run successfully across all 12 parishes with between 240 and 250 volunteers for at least the last four years.

Parishes face fines if they are unable to fill vacant positions within the force. Last year St Saviour was fined £5,000 for failing to appoint two Centeniers and tonight an election is taking place in the parish for a Centenier after Kathrin Baumert stepped down.

Mr Raymond says that more discussions need to take place to consider reducing the number of officers within each parish, as modern life makes it harder to recruit volunteers.
