Man sentenced over parking spaces harassment

The defendant believed that the part-owners of two car parking spaces in Poonah Road, St Helier, had no right to rent out the spaces.

He had thought they were owned by the parish, the Royal Court heard yesterday.

The accused made a number of abusive and threatening telephone calls to one of the owners of the spaces – whom he had never met – between November 2015 and January this year.

He also blocked the parking spaces with a chain and then a gate, and on one occasion had a pile of chipping dumped on the spaces to prevent people from parking there.

After admitting one count of harassment, the 38-year-old was sentenced to a nine-month probation order and a 12-month restraining order.

He was also told to continue to take his medication for his bipolar condition and to attend appointments with the Adult Mental Health Services.
