Island-funded aid will assist 50,000 Syrians

Earlier this year the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission donated £577,000 to the British Red Cross so it could buy aid for 10,000 families affected by war.

Jersey’s donation allowed the British Red Cross to purchase food, tarpaulins and essential household items.

Dr Hosam Faysal, the British Red Cross Syria crisis programme manager in Beirut, said: ‘Thanks to the generosity of the people of Jersey, over 50,000 people will be receiving vital assistance this winter including blankets and food. We really value the support of Jersey Overseas Aid, who show us that the suffering of innocent people affected by war will not be forgotten.’

At a meeting last month, Jersey Overseas Aid commissioners agreed to provide emergency funds for the worsening humanitarian crisis in Syria.
