States would consider future financial help for Jersey Reds

Senator Lyndon Farnham said that Jersey Reds needed to be given time to sort out their financial difficulties and that there would be no immediate States intervention.

However, he refused to rule out the States providing funds in the years ahead should it be needed to safeguard the club’s future.

At an extraordinary general meeting last week, board members of the Jersey Reds revealed that a consortium had bought £1.5 million worth of facilities – including the clubhouse, pavilion, stands, car park and both main pitches – and leased them back to the club.

In a separate development yesterday, Bill Dempsey resigned from his role as director of professional rugby.
