Islanders gather at Cenotaph to pay respects to war dead

Jersey veterans, with medals pinned to their jackets, joined other Islanders old and young for the annual ceremony in a year in which people across Britain have honoured those who died in the Battle of the Somme 100 years ago.

The Dean of Jersey, the Very Rev Bob Key, led the parade from the Town Hall to the Cenotaph, followed by the Roman Catholic Dean Monsignor Nicholas France, Lieutenant-Governor General Sir John McColl, Bailiff William Bailhache, Deputy Viscount Advocate Mark Harris, Chief Minister Ian Gorst, St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft and other States Members.

The crowd fell silent for two minutes to pay respects to former and current servicemen, before a number of poppy wreaths were laid at the foot of the Cenotaph, led by Sir John McColl on behalf of the Queen, the Bailiff on behalf of the States and the people of Jersey and Senator Gorst on behalf of the States.
