Death at 103 of one of Jersey’s oldest residents

Queenie Vardon, née Poingdestre, who during the Second World War was evacuated to the UK, where she helped to manufacture aircraft, passed away at Palm Springs Nursing Home on Sunday.

She was born on 7 April 1913 in Providence Street and grew up in the Girls’ Orphanage, Grouville.

The great-grandmother of six attended Grouville Central School and at 14 went to work in service as a child carer for the Le Feuvre family in St Helier.

At the age of 19 she met her first husband, Alec Eouzan, at First Tower Park fair but after just a few years of married life war broke out and Mrs Vardon was evacuated with her young family to Bolton.
