‘States should have stuck with Fort rink even if it lost money’

Yesterday, Assistant Economic Development Minister Murray Norton said that plans for the rink had been withdrawn after a departmental review found it would ‘run at considerable cost to the taxpayer’. Just days earlier he had stated he believed the venture would at least break even.

Yesterday’s announcement was the latest development in a saga which began last month when it was revealed that a separate rink would be run at the Weighbridge. The move prompted Ice Skate Jersey to pull plans for its annual rink at the Fort.

Days later, the States stepped in to safeguard the venture at the Fort, before the plans were eventually shelved yesterday afternoon.

Former politician Sean Power, chairman of the group which tried to save the Fort rink, said: ‘I think it has been a disaster. They have essentially walked away from the Fort Regent ice-rink function.’
