Fort Regent drops plan for an ice rink – again

Last week Assistant Economic Development Minister Murray Norton said he was confident that the rink would generate enough income to cover its costs.

However, in a statement yesterday, Deputy Norton said that the plans had now been pulled after a departmental review concluded that the rink would run ‘at a considerable cost to the taxpayer’ and would not represent ‘prudent use of public funds’.

It is the latest twist in the ice rink saga, which began last month when the Jersey Development Company announced that it was allowing a rival operator to run a rink on the Weighbridge.

Days later, Ice Skate Jersey announced that it had cancelled plans for its annual Christmas rink at the Fort, claiming that the competition would make the operation commercially unviable.they would fund the Fort rink, with the help of sponsors.
