Battling against a once-deadly disease

In the last five years the number of Islanders who have been diagnosed with the disease at Overdale Hospital’s Diabetes Centre has risen by around 1,650.

The majority of those have the Type 2 condition, which is associated with being overweight and occurs when the body does not produce insulin or when the body’s cells do not react to insulin, while 426 have Type 1.

In recent years emphasis has been put on healthy eating and regular exercise because of the soaring number of people being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
