Woman sentenced for smuggling illegal immigrant into Jersey

Amanda Marreakhy (28), from Leeds, was sentenced to 312 hours of community service by the court’s Inferior Number for bringing Amir Merikhi, an illegal immigrant from Iran, into the Island in January.

The court heard that Mr Merikhi had feared for his life in Iran and begged his sister-in-law to bring him to Jersey so he could claim asylum.

He was convicted in the Magistrate’s Court earlier this year and sentenced to a suspended jail term before later being granted asylum to live in the UK.
