The Island’s much-loved Nativity donkey calls performing a day

Alongside his work as a performer, 26-year-old John Henry, who lives in a field in St Ouen, has also helped to raise awareness for the animal welfare charity Brooke: Action for Working Horses and Donkeys, by making annual appearances around St Helier.

The organisation raises awareness and money for working horses, donkeys and mules which the group says are used in harsh environments to help poor and marginalised communities to earn a living and support families.

John Henry’s owner, Mary Gaiger, said that a few days before this year’s annual town outing, she thought that the donkey was not his normal self.

She realised that he was too old and decided to hang up his reins.
