Pet owners urged to vaccinate against rare disease

The 27-year-old veterinary surgeon has told how she contracted Leptospirosis last month – a disease which is carried in an infected animal’s urine. If left untreated, it can leave sufferers with serious long-term health problems, including kidney damage and liver failure.

The most common signs of Leptospirosis in humans are a rash and flu-like symptoms. Animals with the disease experience similar symptoms, including lack of appetite, increased thirst and urination, vomiting and difficulty breathing.

The vet, who has asked to remain anonymous, told the JEP that at first she thought she had flu, but that her symptoms steadily got worse over a period of days.
