Details of planned Islandwide speed-limit changes emerge

Almost every parish is considering introducing new 20 mph limits in village centres, while some are considering cutting speeds on other major roads.

But St John Constable Chris Taylor has warned that cutting too many speed limits risks ‘frustrating’ motorists and forcing them to use lanes and smaller roads as ‘rat runs’.

Instead, he is proposing a French-style traffic-calming scheme in St John, which could be introduced as early as next year. He also called for speed cameras to be introduced in the Island and for serious speeding offenders to face fines of up to £10,000.
