Call for ‘clean’ farming near the reservoirs

Rather than changing to chemicals that are safer to use close to water supplies, or taking land out of production to ensure that the Island’s water quality meets international standards, Steven Carter, of Farm Fresh Organics, says that growers should ditch conventional agricultural practises for a more natural way of farming.

‘I think that organic farming should be encouraged by the Environment Department because it is a system that does not pollute, and that has to be good for the Island and for farming. The land that is categorised to be high risk in terms of water pollution around reservoirs should be farmed organically,’ he said.

‘And that should also apply to all Crown land and parish- and States-owned land, as that would show a very large commitment to enhancing the environment.’
