Bulb of an idea to highlight the near eradication of polio

Members of St John’s Golden Age Club as well as a seniors’ exercise class and the church congregation planted purple crocus corms in the parish churchyard in support of the Rotary Club’s Purple4Polio campaign.

This initiative highlights that the number of polio cases around the world has fallen by 99.9 per cent in 30 years, from more than 350,000 recorded cases in 1985 to just 25 to date this year.

Islanders decided to plant the 20,000 bulbs, which were donated by the Rotary Club, to help raise awareness of the muscle-wasting disease, which has affected millions worldwide.

The purple crocus was chosen as its colour represents the purple dye used to mark the finger of a child who has been immunised.
