Dairy calls for return of free school milk

The dairy suggests that the initiative – which would cost an estimated £250,000 a year – could be rolled out across the 30 schools through a public-private partnership with the States.

Bob Jones of Jersey Dairy says that they want the States to review its 2010 decision to scrap the schools’ milk scheme to help promote healthier diets in children.

Mr Jones added that re-introducing school milk would also help the dairy to recover sales lost by a three per cent reduction in the Island’s milk consumption over the last five years, a decrease which he attributes to the States decision and the fall in visitor numbers.

The dairy says that it would be willing to produce the milk at cost to reduce the burden on the taxpayer and also suggests that a commercial sponsor could be found to fund part of the scheme as well.
