Conker trees facing double threat from invasive killers

The invasive threats – which are also predicted to kill two million horse chestnuts in the UK in the next 15 years – could wipe out distinctive Island trees such as the ones in the Royal Square and along Hydrangea Avenue in St Ouen.

And it would mean that the childhood game of conkers could also disappear from the Island’s playgrounds.

The main culprit is the leaf-miner moth – Latin name Cameraria ohridella – which arrived in the British Isles from Europe in 2000 and within seven years had infected half of the two million horse chestnut trees.

The moth was first recorded in Jersey in 2007.
