Treasury gets tough on the tax dodgers

Senator Alan Maclean and Comptroller of Tax Richard Summersgill have announced plans to introduce higher fines for tax avoidance and evasion, including interest on unpaid tax potentially going back decades.

The plans follow a number of proposals published today, among them price increases on alcohol and fuel and tax relief on child care.

The report also revealed that an assessment of whether companies on zero rates of Corporation Tax could contribute more in revenue to the Treasury would be carried out next year.
