Plan to put arch on the march from old prison to Waterfront

In February Deputy Eddie Noel said he hoped new uses could be found for the old Newgate Street prison façade and a granite arch which once stood in New Street.

The first part of his plan is to erect the arch taken down as part of the St Paul’s Gate development in the 1990s on the roundabout above the underpass to form a ‘gateway to St Helier’ – an idea suggested earlier this year by former Senator Terry Le Main.

As for the prison granite, which has been hidden in secret locations since 1975 to prevent the stones being stolen, Deputy Noel says he would like to see it erected along the eastern boundary of Jardins de la Mer to the south of Gloucester Street.

He says that all he needs now is planning permission and the money to make both projects happen because there is no spare funding in his department’s budget.
