Man is jailed after Shelter stand-off with armed police

The Magistrate’s Court was told that the 21-year-old said that he had an axe and had made threats to kill Shelter staff before he holed up in the room, which he went on to trash.

It later transpired that he did not have an axe, and although he was in possession of a Stanley knife, he did not threaten anyone with it. The court heard that the only person he harmed was himself.

As a result of his actions and the fact that he had breached the terms of a community service order, he was jailed for 26 weeks and was ordered to pay £500 compensation – one tenth of the amount the Shelter Trust said it would cost to repair the damage.
