Campaigners ‘shocked’ at level of nitrates pumped into the bay

Save Our Shoreline Jersey, which yesterday released the document, said that after spending the summer testing water from outflows on the south and south-east coasts, they were ‘shocked’ at the high levels of ammonia and nitrates present in the liquid run-off pumped onto the shore at First Tower.

It is widely accepted that conditions in the bay – warm water, sunshine and nutrient-rich run-off – allow the frequent sea lettuce blooms to take place, leaving the area carpeted in a pungent green plant matter.

It is also suspected that nitrate-rich water from France may be playing a part.

However, SOSJ dispute this claim.
