High tech reveals one of Jersey’s secrets of the deep

The Dutch cargo ship SS Schokland was transporting 284 troops and 26 crew from the Channel Islands to St Malo in January 1943 when it struck rocks off Noirmont.

The vessel lies in 23 metres of water about two kilometres off the coast and has become a popular dive site.

Images of the ship were taken during a recent survey of the sea-bed by Royal Navy vessel HMS Gleaner, which spent three months in Jersey waters charting the shipping areas leading into St Helier.
