Troops move into Games host island

Steve Jacobs, the association’s chairman, said he had not received any information regarding the decision by the government to station a detachment of 150 troops on the island, which is considered a strategic territory and was heavily defended during the Cold War.

However, he said he would be monitoring developments in the region and would expect an update if there was considered to be any risk to competitors, who are due to travel there for the Games in June next year.

And he added that although he was not concerned he would be monitoring the situation.
