Social rented housing scheme in centre of St Helier is turned down

Three out of four members of the Planning Committee yesterday turned down plans submitted by Christians Together in Jersey Housing Trust.

The organisation, which planners and the Island’s Strategic Housing Unit said had an ‘excellent track record’ when it came to providing social housing, had proposed demolishing the former Scope Furnishings shop in Minden Place to build 31 units of accommodation and three retail outlets.

The committee – vice-chairman Constable Philip Le Sueur and Deputies Russell Labey, Richard Rondel and Graham Truscott – heard how the scheme had been designed for people ‘on the edge of society’ who might be making their way back into the community.
