2,000 Islanders may have diabetes and not know it

Diabetes consultant Dr Peter Bates has issued a plea for Islanders – particularly those over the age of 50 – to go for regular check-ups to ensure early diagnosis of the condition, which, if left untreated, can lead to heart attacks, strokes, blindness and kidney failure.

There are approximately 4,370 people in Jersey who have been diagnosed at Overdale Hospital’s Diabetes Centre with the disease, a lifelong condition that causes a person’s blood sugar level to become too high.

However, Dr Bates said there were likely to be as many as 2,000 Islanders living with undiagnosed type-two diabetes.
