More public spending cuts may be on the way

Treasury Minister Alan Maclean said that cutbacks could continue long after 2019 when it was predicted that the States’ books would be balanced.

And he hinted that a permanent programme to help the States curb spending could be introduced.

The minister would not be drawn on whether there would be further taxes or charges.

He made the comments as he outlined that the States is preparing for its income levels to drop after the Fiscal Policy Panel predicted that Jersey’s economy would not grow in 2017 and 2018.
