Ministers under fire at busy St Ouen hustings

Responding to a question posed by an audience member about the tax and whether exemptions should be put in place, several of the candidates admitted that while they were opposed to GST, they were resigned to the fact that it would remain in force.

GST was initially introduced at a rate of three per cent in 2008, but that has since risen to five per cent.

And while many of the candidates admitted that GST was here to stay, virtually all vowed to oppose any proposed increases to the tax, and several argued that exemptions on items like food and children’s clothings should be considered.
