Festival of Words puts Jèrriais in the spotlight

At this year’s Jersey Festival of Words, Jèrriais folk band Badlabecques will perform at a literary cabaret at the Arts Centre on 30 September.

Badlabecques are led by linguist Kit Ashton, who spoke on the subject at last year’s inaugural festival and has since received a grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council UK to study Jèrriais to PhD level.

On 1 October, teachers Tony Scott-Warren and Geraint Jennings will give a presentation entitled ‘Jèrriais: It’s electrifying!’ on recent developments in preserving the language and the Jersey Festival of Words is also offering a free place to a Jèrriais speaker at a five-hour creative writing workshop on ‘Spirit of place’, to be led by award-winning poet Jo Bell at La Hougue Bie on 2 October.
