Two commended for trying to rescue boy

Eoin Anthony Corcoran (14) was buried by tonnes of sand while tunnelling into one of the largest dunes in St Ouen’s Bay at around 5 pm on Friday 5 February.

The Les Quennevais pupil, who was taking his GCSEs, and a friend were walking through the sand dunes area before the accident happened, an inquest heard yesterday.

The pair started taking turns digging a tunnel into the dune, which is locally known as the ‘100-footer’, as they sought shelter from the wind, but the tunnel, which was aimed downwards, collapsed on top of Eoin while he was digging and buried him from the knees up, leaving only his legs sticking out.
