Take care in the dunes – warning to public following inquest into boy’s death

A friend and a passer-by tried ‘valiantly’ to pull Eoin Corcoran out by his legs after he was buried from the knees up in the early evening of 5 February.

The Les Quennevais student died of sand inhalation and traumatic asphyxiation as he was buried for around ten minutes at the foot of one of the largest sand dunes in St Ouen’s Bay.

John Pinel, principal ecologist for the Environment Department, said that apart from the risk of dunes collapsing, there are many dangers in Jersey’s countryside and the Environment Department is currently reviewing the signage in the dunes to see if it needs to be improved to increase awareness of the dangers.
