Drone misusers could be fined £2,000

Pilots of the popular devices, which can be bought for a few hundred pounds, will be prosecuted and may be fined up to £2,000 or banned from flying drones if caught using them within two nautical miles of the Airport, according to the director of civil aviation for the Channel Islands, Gus Patterson.

It is illegal to fly a drone above 400 feet or within 50 metres of people, vehicles or buildings if the device has a camera attached and Mr Patterson said he has had enough of persistent offenders and added that authorities had tried to use the ‘carrot’ approach but it was now time to use the ‘stick’.

So far this year the States police have received eight reports concerning drones, with some Islanders worried that the devices, which often have built-in cameras, are being used to snoop on them or their private land.
